My name is Erick Burt Carrión Rivera, and I'd like to share the story of my life, a journey filled with diverse experiences that have shaped my unique perspective and fueled my deep commitment to positive change.
I was born into a very humble Puerto Rican family, and my early years were spent in the serene rural heartland of Puerto Rico, while my late teen years were spent on the United States mainland. These contrasting environments instilled in me a profound appreciation for the wonders of nature and a keen eye for the small, often overlooked details that would later become invaluable to me.
From a young age, I possessed an innate curiosity, always eager to understand what others might miss. I recognized the systemic injustices that permeate our society, and I firmly believed that the path to genuine change begins with personal growth and self-reflection, a belief that has remained a guiding principle throughout my life.
My transformative journey took a significant turn when I made the bold decision to venture to the United States as a young student. I sought to learn English and immerse myself in the American way of life. Living with my aunt and grandmother in a local public housing community, I couldn't help but notice how many of my friends were being directed down various paths by societal forces. This realization ignited a determination within me to make a difference, even though, at that time, I felt powerless to confront the complexities of the world.
Before completing high school, I eagerly engaged in community service. I volunteered as a teacher assistant at Bennie Dover's Saturday School and explored my passion for acting at Teatro Latino de New London. Additionally, I dedicated my time to the Office of New London Youth Affairs, actively participating in groups like SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and TIA (Teens in Action).
My pursuit of education continued as I entered college. Initially, I applied to colleges in the United States, but I soon realized the financial barriers posed significant challenges. Instead, I was fortunate to receive a full scholarship at the University of the Sacred Heart in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where I pursued a degree in theater with a minor in education. However, this journey wasn't without its obstacles, as I commuted for 4 years from my rural home to the university, relying on public transportation.
During my time at the university, I recognized a need for more inclusive opportunities in theater for incoming freshmen. In response, I co-founded a new student theater organization aimed at providing an inclusive platform for all students to participate in theater productions. This innovative model inspired other theater organizations to adopt similar principles.
My leadership extended beyond the stage when I became a Board of Education Representative for the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Humanistic and Social Studies. In this role, I passionately advocated for my peers and addressed issues affecting students within my department. I also took charge of directing and co-directing the college art gallery, where I fostered collaboration among student artists and transformed it into a thriving cultural hub.
My commitment to education and community service remained steadfast. Every summer, spring & winter breaks, I returned to New London to work as a teacher assistant at New London High School and as an organizer for Hearing Youth Voices. In these roles, I empowered young people, advocated for students, and tirelessly worked toward fair policy changes in the local school system.
In 2016, I made a meaningful return to New London, taking on the role of Youth Organizer at FRESH New London. Here, I embarked on a mission to empower local youth, connecting them and nurturing a sense of community. My dedication extended to urban agriculture, promoting sustainability, and fostering unity.
My passion for community wellbeing led me to the Alliance for Living, where I assumed the roles of Non-Medical & Housing Case Manager and the organization's first Early Intervention Specialist. I orchestrated the logistics of the New London County HIV/HEP C testing initiative, collaborating with the Connecticut Department of Public Health and numerous healthcare organizations to expand access to critical services.
In 2016, I joined the Board of Directors of the Better Way Foundation as a working member and interim secretary, actively shaping the foundation's mission and community impact.
In 2017, I courageously ran for the Board of Education, and was assigned the role of community representative. In this role, I proposed meaningful curriculum changes and supported recommendations from Hearing Youth Voices, advocating for culturally relevant curriculum that resonated with the diverse student body.
In late 2018, I felt a deep longing to return to my roots in Puerto Rico. After a year of job searching, I fulfilled that desire in December 2019. I've since settled in San Juan, where I now work as a Medical Device Support Specialist. Simultaneously, was pursuing a Master of Arts degree in International Relations & Diplomacy at the Center for Advanced Studies of Puerto Rico & the Caribbean. In this academic realm, I boldly challenge established norms and question the status quo, particularly regarding the imperative need for democracy in international processes.
My commitment to social betterment remains steadfast. I continue to serve on the Board of the Better Way Foundation, and in late 2021, I assumed the role of Chair of the Board of Directors, guiding the foundation's mission with wisdom, compassion, and a clear vision for the future.
In my cherished free time, I explore the rich tapestry of local history, seeking to understand the roots of my culture and heritage. I volunteer tirelessly for a myriad of causes dear to my heart, leaving no stone unturned in my quest to make the world a better place. An intrepid explorer of my homeland, I traverse Puerto Rico, uncovering its hidden gems and sharing my discoveries with an ever-curious spirit.
My zest for life extends to my commitment to personal well-being, immersing myself in spinning classes and the serenity of yoga. These practices not only strengthen my body but also rejuvenate my spirit, allowing me to continue my journey as a beacon of positive change, an advocate for community empowerment, and a lifelong learner who seeks to challenge, question, and inspire.
My life's story is a testament to the power of unwavering dedication, the importance of community, and the pursuit of knowledge. I am humbled by the experiences that have shaped me, and I remain committed to contributing positively to the world around me. As I look ahead, I am eager to continue this remarkable journey, embracing new challenges and opportunities with an open heart and a steadfast belief in the capacity for change—both within ourselves and within the communities we serve.
